Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the changes in the number of participants for various activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, it was evident that both film club and martial arts participants remained steady over 20 years even though film club remained the highest numbered of all. Moreover, table tennis and musical performances showed an increment in data though for music data appeared after several years. Conversely, Amateur dramatics was noted as the only activity with declined figure.

Foremost, film club was seen as the significantly popular activity as it had the highest numbers of participant of 60 to 70 numbers in all these 20 years. Even though martial arts were almost half of the number of film club members it had the identical steady pattern as it stayed only between 30 to 40 numbers in 2000 to 2020.

Additionally, table tennis remained constant (under number 20) till 2010 then rose sharply to more than number 50 which shows approximately 30 number of increment. While musical performance also rose but its data existed from the year 2005 number 0 to gradually increasing to almost 15 in the year 2020. Amateur dramatics was the only activity with declining members as remained between number 20 to 30 then descended sharply to less than number 10.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the trends for all five activities. You successfully identified the main trends, such as the stability of the film club and the sharp rise in table tennis. However, the report could be improved by providing more precise data points. For instance, instead of saying '60 to 70 numbers', you should be more specific based on the graph. Additionally, the comparison between activities is somewhat limited; while you mention the film club is the highest, you could further contrast the growth rates of musical performances versus the decline in amateur dramatics to provide a more analytical overview.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Conversely', and 'Additionally' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by slightly mechanical phrasing, such as 'number 0 to gradually increasing to almost 15'. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to the repetitive use of the word 'number' to describe data points.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'increment', 'steady', and 'descended'. However, there is a recurring issue with word choice and collocation. For example, using 'highest numbered of all' or '30 number of increment' is unnatural. You often use the word 'number' where it is unnecessary or grammatically incorrect. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise reporting verbs and nouns, such as 'fluctuated', 'plateaued', or 'a significant rise', rather than relying on the word 'number' to describe every data point.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles and prepositions (e.g., 'the only activity with declined figure' should be 'a declining figure'). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and awkward phrasing, such as 'its data existed from the year 2005 number 0'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence structure variety and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be beneficial.
