Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively covers all requirements of the task. You have identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. The selection of key features is accurate, such as highlighting the film club's popularity and the significant growth in table tennis participation. Comparisons are made appropriately throughout the text, particularly when contrasting the rise of table tennis with the decline of amateur dramatics. The data is presented clearly, and the information is well-supported by the figures provided in the graph. You have successfully summarized the information without unnecessary detail, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the specific trends. Cohesive devices such as 'In 2000', 'In contrast', and 'before rising to' are used effectively to link information. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is easy to follow. To reach a higher band, you could experiment with a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect sentences more fluidly, but the current structure is already clear and coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the trends accurately. Phrases like 'increased greatly', 'declined', 'changed only slightly', and 'remained stable' are appropriate for describing graph data. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, it is somewhat standard. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items, such as 'witnessed a sharp surge' instead of 'increased sharply' or 'experienced a downward trend' instead of 'fell'. However, the current range is adequate and used with good control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly. You have successfully used past tense forms to describe the historical data, which is essential for this task. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. To improve further, you could aim to include a wider variety of complex structures, such as using more participial phrases or passive voice constructions to vary the sentence rhythm and demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
