Student answer (Band 7.0)
The provided line graph illustrates statistics regarding the number of participants in five activities (film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis, and musical performances) at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia, from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the largest number of participants was observed in the film club throughout the period. Table tennis showed the fastest growth, while amateur dramatics became much less popular. Martial arts changed only slightly, and musical performances increased gradually.
In 2000, the film club had about 64 participants, followed by martial arts with 36. Amateur dramatics attracted 25 people, while table tennis had only 16 participants. No one took part in musical performances at the beginning of the period. By 2010, the film club remained stable at around 60, while table tennis and amateur dramatics were equal at 20 participants.
during the final decade, table tennis rose sharply from 36 in 2015 to about 54 by 2020, becoming the second most popular activity. However, amateur dramatics fell steadily to only 6 participants. Meanwhile, musical performances increased from 12 to 18, and martial arts finished at around 36, almost the same as its starting point.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all five activities and made relevant comparisons, such as noting the film club's dominance and the contrasting trends between table tennis and amateur dramatics. The data is accurately reported, and the selection of key features is appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently provide data points for all comparisons made, as there were minor gaps in the middle years that could have been bridged to provide a more comprehensive summary of the progression.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information effectively. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'while,' 'however,' and 'meanwhile' to connect ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the information flows well from one point to the next. To improve further, ensure that transitions between sentences are varied to avoid a slightly mechanical feel in the way you introduce new data points.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'remained stable,' 'rose sharply,' and 'fell steadily' are well-chosen and appropriate for describing graph trends. You avoid repetition and use a variety of terms to describe the movement of the lines. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items would help elevate the response to a higher band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your control over grammar is generally strong. Most sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is accurate. There is a minor capitalization error at the start of the final paragraph ('during the final...'), but this does not impede communication. Your use of tense is consistent with the requirements of the task. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or more varied subordinate clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
