Student answer (Band 7.0)

The chart represents the data regarding the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, while film club and martial arts experienced volatility, Amateur dramatics witnessed a dramatic decline. Most strikingly, despite starting at a lowest rate, table tennis eventually over took both martial arts and Amateur dramatics. On the other hand, musical performance had no participants until 2005.

In 2000, the film club had 64 participants which slightly decreased to 60 in 2010, before rebounding to 65 by the end of the period. Martial arts remained relatively steady, starting with 35 in 2000, peaking at 39 in 2010 and concluded at 36.

The other activities began with lower participants, 27 for Amateur dramatics, 16 for table tennis and 0 for musical performance, as they were not available initially. Over the next decade, armateur dramatics substantial declined, dropping to just 5 by the end of the period. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided relevant data points to support your summary. The overview clearly highlights the key shifts, such as the decline in amateur dramatics and the growth of table tennis. You have made effective comparisons between the activities. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, you mentioned musical performance started with 0 participants in 2005, but the graph indicates it began at 0 in 2005 and rose thereafter. You have covered all parts of the task well and provided a clear, logical summary of the information provided in the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group the activities effectively. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand,' 'Conversely,' and 'In 2000' to guide the reader through the data. The progression of ideas is smooth, and each paragraph has a clear central topic. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for this task. To improve further, ensure that referencing is always precise, as some transitions between sentences could be even more fluid to avoid a slightly mechanical feel.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision, using terms like 'volatility,' 'dramatic decline,' and 'rebounding.' There are some minor errors in word formation, such as 'armateur' (spelling) and 'substantial declined' (should be 'substantially declined'). However, these errors do not impede communication. You show an ability to use less common lexical items, which is a strength. Focusing on consistent accuracy in word forms and collocations will help you move into the higher band range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'starting at a lowest rate' (should be 'the lowest rate') and 'substantial declined' (adverb needed). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence variety helps maintain the flow of the report. Continued practice in ensuring adverb-verb agreement and article usage will further strengthen your grammatical control.
