Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph provides details about the number of participants for distinct activities at a social center located in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020. Overall, the film club dominated throughout the two decades, while the musical performances stayed relatively lower as compared to other activities such as martial arts, amateur dramatics and table tennis, which show mixed patterns and frequent fluctuations throughout the period.
In 2000, the film club comprised of 65 participants, which was almost the double of the martial arts participants, who were about 36 at that time. In addition, the participants of amateur dramatics and table tennis were 25 and 16, respectively. In the later years, the participants taking part in the film club decreased gradually until 2010, reducing to become only 60 participants. After 2010, the number of participations experienced a surge as more and more people started getting enrolled in this club, which resulted in the final figure to reach an approximate of 66 people. The martial arts club went through several ups and downs during this period; for instance, it peaked at 39 participants in 2010, while also reaching as low as 31 participants in 2005. In 2020, it increased to become the same number of participants that it had initially. Along with this, the table tennis club demonstrates a huge difference between the participants number by going up to about 54 participants by 2020. The number remained unchanged at 20 participants between 2005 and 2010; after which it went up significantly till 2020, surpassing all the other activities except the film club. Furthermore, the amateur dramatics activity increased its starting figure by 4 more participants in 2005, but ever since it has undergone a continuous decline in terms of participants, and lost about 24 participants to become around 5 participants.
Musical performances, on the other hand, had no participants initially, but the number continued to increase considerably after 2005. In 2020, the figure reached a little below 20 participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all requirements of the task. You have identified the main trends and provided relevant comparisons, such as noting the film club's dominance and the contrasting growth of musical performances. The overview is clear and sets the context well. You have selected key data points to support your descriptions, such as the initial and final figures for the various activities. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with absolute precision; for instance, ensure the distinction between 'participants' and 'number of participations' is consistent, as the graph tracks the number of participants. Overall, the information is well-selected and logically presented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary of the musical performances. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'on the other hand' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of activities. The referencing is generally clear, though occasionally the flow could be improved by grouping activities with similar trends more tightly to avoid jumping between different clubs. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'dominated throughout', 'frequent fluctuations', and 'experienced a surge' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'comprised of' (which should be 'comprised' or 'was composed of') and 'participants number' (which should be 'number of participants'). However, these errors do not impede communication. You show an ability to use less common lexical items, which helps in describing the trends accurately. Continued focus on natural collocations will help elevate your score further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There is good control over grammar, and most sentences are error-free. However, there are occasional slips, such as 'the participants of amateur dramatics... were 25' (should refer to the number of participants) and 'the same number of participants that it had initially' (slightly wordy). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the errors present do not cause any difficulty for the reader. To improve, try to incorporate more varied complex structures, such as participial phrases or advanced relative clauses, to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
