Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the information about the players for multiple games at one social center in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020. The five activities are film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances.

Overall, the film club participants accounted for the highest number of participants among others, whereas the musical performers were the lowest in the graph.

To begin with, the number of participants in the film club was above 60 in every year. Moreover, the martial arts participants lay between 30 to 40 students till 2020. In addition, the number of amateur dramatics participants was around 25 and increased slightly in 2005, afterwards the number of participants decreased drastically till 2010 and reaching around 5. On the other hand, the number of table tennis participants was above 15 in 2000 and it increased slightly till 2010 and both amateur dramatics and table tennis had around 20 participants. However, the number of table tennis participants increased significantly till 2020 and reached above 50. Somehow, the musical performances students was negligible in 2005 but there was a sharp increment until 2020 were reaching around 20.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the main trends. You successfully identified the highest and lowest participants and highlighted key changes over the 20-year period. However, the analysis could be improved by grouping the data more effectively; for instance, categorizing activities by their growth or decline patterns rather than listing them individually. While the main features are reported, some data points are slightly imprecise (e.g., 'above 60' or 'around 5'), which could be more specific to better reflect the graph's details. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements for a clear summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You used cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'In addition,' and 'On the other hand' to link ideas. However, the transition between the description of amateur dramatics and table tennis is slightly abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow within the second body paragraph could be smoother. Some referencing is a bit mechanical, and the use of 'Somehow' at the start of the final sentence is inappropriate for an academic report, as it does not function as a logical connector.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accounted for,' 'drastically,' and 'sharp increment.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'players for multiple games' (the graph refers to 'participants' in 'activities') and 'musical performances students' (which is awkward phrasing). The repetition of 'number of participants' throughout the text limits the lexical variety. To reach a higher band, try to use more precise synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' and avoid repetitive sentence structures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the musical performances students was' (subject-verb agreement) and 'were reaching around 20' (incorrect verb form). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and prepositional errors, such as 'between 30 to 40' (should be 'between 30 and 40'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
