Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends and making relevant comparisons. You successfully highlighted the growth of musical performances and the sharp rise in table tennis. However, the description of the film club is slightly confusing; you mention it 'topped the chart' with 65% but then state it 'started with almost 65% and ended with a 66%'. This is repetitive and lacks clarity regarding its overall trend compared to other categories. To improve, ensure that data points are clearly linked to specific years and avoid contradictory or redundant phrasing when describing the same trend.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by activity. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different trends. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'and after it grew' or 'and after it witnessed'. Using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'subsequently', 'following this period', 'in contrast to this') would improve the flow between sentences and make the progression of ideas feel more natural and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'surged', 'fluctuations', and 'substantial growth' effectively. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'surging it declined' is awkward, and 'topped the chart' is used somewhat repetitively. There is also a minor error in the use of '0%' for musical performances, which might be a misinterpretation of the graph's starting point. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary is consistently accurate when describing statistical trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'after it grew significantly during the period' and 'after it dropped gradually'. The phrase 'after surging it declined' is also grammatically weak. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but some sentences are slightly clunky due to awkward phrasing. To improve, focus on refining your use of subordinate clauses and ensuring that your sentence structures are grammatically sound, particularly when describing time-based changes.
