Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the ranges of people participating in different activities at one social center in Melbourne ,Australia for the period form 2000 to 2020.

Overall, Film club accounts for the highest strength of participants whereas Musical performances have lowest strength. After 2010 Table tennis participants were rapidly increased and Amateur dramatics were opposite.

It is clear that Film club participants were stable over the time period with the average of around 63 participants, overall. Musical performers last in terms of participation where they started to participate in 2005, later in upcoming years the strength was increased with 15 participants.

Additionally, participants for Amateur dramatics steadily decreased with around 20 participants from 2005 to 2020. Table tennis was the only group, where with around 30 participants were rapidly increased form 2005 to 2020. Moreover, there was a significant connect, where in 2010 Table tennis and Amateur dramatics participants were equal with 20 participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the graph, including the trends for the four activities. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For example, the description of the Film club as 'stable' is accurate, but the report lacks precise data points to support the trends described. The overview is present but could be more effectively integrated; it identifies the highest and lowest participants but misses the opportunity to highlight the most significant trend (the crossover between Table tennis and Amateur dramatics). The reporting of figures is occasionally imprecise, such as 'around 63', which makes it difficult for the reader to verify the data against the graph. To improve, ensure that key data points are clearly cited to support all generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific activities. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'Additionally', and 'Moreover', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'there was a significant connect', which does not clearly convey the relationship between the data sets. Referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for the task, and the information is presented in a logical sequence that allows the reader to follow the trends described.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. The student relies on repetitive phrasing, such as 'strength of participants' and 'participants were increased'. These collocations are unnatural; 'number of participants' or 'participation levels' would be more accurate. There are also some minor errors in word choice, such as 'significant connect' instead of 'significant intersection' or 'crossover'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it does not demonstrate the flexibility or the range of less common lexical items needed to move beyond a band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'Musical performers last in terms of participation' (missing verb) and 'Table tennis was the only group, where with around 30 participants were rapidly increased' (cluttered syntax). The use of prepositions and verb tenses is inconsistent, for example, 'form 2000 to 2020' (spelling error) and 'the strength was increased'. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. More attention to subject-verb agreement and sentence construction is needed.
