Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given line graph illustrates the information about the numbers of participants at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia for different activities (like film club, table tennis, etc.), between the year 2000 to 2020.
Overall, activities like film club and martial arts had been varying throughout the period, while activities like table tennis and musical performances are on a surge. Lastly, amateur dramatics had a decline from 2000 to 2020.
Looking at the details of the line graph, film club activity was the most popular in its initial year 2000, and after going from some fluctuation, it was still the most popular reaching around 70 participants in 2020. Similarly, martial arts were practiced by almost 40 people and after some fluctuation it stayed constant to same number.
Moreover, around 20 people were interested in table tennis in 2000, but it leaped to more than 50 admissions in 2020. Following to this, none of them was participating in musical performances, however it inclined to 20 participants in 2020. In contrast, people were losing interest in amateur dramatics as their numbers fell from 26 to below 10.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the graph, including the trends for all five activities. You have successfully identified the main trends, such as the growth in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, the overview could be more precise; for instance, stating that martial arts 'stayed constant' is slightly inaccurate as the graph shows a fluctuation between 2000 and 2020. Additionally, while you mention the numbers, providing more specific comparative data (e.g., comparing the starting and ending points of the film club versus other activities) would strengthen the analysis. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the specific data. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Following to this', and 'In contrast' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from general trends to specific data points. To improve, ensure that the referencing is precise; for example, 'none of them' is a bit vague when referring to musical performance participants. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and supports the flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuation', 'admissions', and 'inclined'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'none of them was participating' is slightly awkward in this context, and 'admissions' is not the most natural term for social centre activities. The use of 'on a surge' is a good attempt at more descriptive language. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations related to data description, such as 'experienced a steady increase' or 'remained relatively stable'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'between the year 2000 to 2020' should be 'between 2000 and 2020' or 'from 2000 to 2020'. The phrase 'stayed constant to same number' is grammatically incorrect and should be 'remained constant at the same number'. Additionally, 'Following to this' is an incorrect prepositional phrase. Despite these errors, the sentence structures are varied enough to convey the information effectively without impeding communication.
