Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph elucidates the numeral of participants for various activities at one social center in Melbourne, Australia between the year 2000 and 2020.

Taking a general overview, the most enjoyed activity in the year of 2000 was film club, whereas the least type of activity enjoyed by participants was musical performances.

It is pellucid that the activity in Melbourne which was the most preferable was the film club where the number of participants stood at approximately 65. The number of participants remained almost the same throughout the years, however there was a slight decrease in the numbers in the year 2010 which declined to 60 individuals, however, it progressed to the same numbers in 2020 as of 2000. In addition to that, the martial arts was the second most liked activity at the social center, which stood at almost 40 individuals in 2000 which fluctuated throughout the period of 15 years, reaching around 35 individuals at the end of 2020.

Moving further, the amateur dramatics activity was liked by almost 30 individuals which expanded its number to 30 people in 2005. Later as the years progressed, the number of participants abruptly declined, reaching around 5 individuals. As a result this became the least enjoyed activity in 2020. Furthermore, table tennis was the second last activity that was least liked by around 15 people which gradually increased and surged to 50 participants in 2020. The activity that was in no existence in 2000 was musical performances which gradually increased and reached a little over 10 individuals in participation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the main trends. You successfully identified the most popular activity and the significant changes in participation over the 20-year period. However, the analysis could be improved by grouping the data more effectively; for instance, categorizing activities by their growth or decline patterns rather than listing them individually. While the main features are reported, the comparison between activities is sometimes limited to simple descriptions of individual lines. To reach a higher band, ensure that the 'overview' paragraph highlights the most striking differences or similarities across the entire period more holistically.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'In addition to that,' 'Moving further,' and 'As a result,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, though the final paragraph is a bit dense with information. To improve, ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is smoother and that referencing (e.g., 'the activity that was in no existence') is more precise to avoid awkward phrasing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'elucidates,' 'fluctuated,' and 'surged' effectively. There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'numeral of participants' (should be 'number') and 'the least type of activity enjoyed' (should be 'the least popular activity'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and descriptive adverbs would help elevate the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a positive feature. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the activity that was in no existence' (should be 'non-existent') and 'the year of 2000' (unnecessary 'of'). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly clunky, such as 'the same numbers in 2020 as of 2000.' While these errors rarely impede meaning, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and more natural prepositional usage will help improve your accuracy.
