Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, identifying trends for each activity. However, there are significant inaccuracies in the interpretation of the data. For example, you state that 'Musical performances has zero participants in 2005', but the graph shows the line starting at 2000. Additionally, you misinterpret the location, stating '2 states (Melbourne and Australia)', whereas the graph clearly indicates one social centre in Melbourne, Australia. While you provide a summary and some comparisons, the lack of precision in data reporting and the misreading of the prompt's context prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure you carefully read the axis labels and data points before writing.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific trends. You use some cohesive devices like 'In contrast' and 'whereas' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'If we see details'. The use of referencing is occasionally mechanical, and the overall flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more naturally. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs feels abrupt.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to describe trends such as 'rising steadily', 'remained stable', and 'fallen dramatically'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'has fall' instead of 'has fallen' and 'were having' instead of 'had'. The range is somewhat limited, and you rely on repetitive structures to describe the data. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' and ensure that your verb forms are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('participants who has taken part', 'Martial arts have'), incorrect tense usage ('has fall', 'were having'), and missing articles or prepositions. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent and occur in almost every sentence. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing past and present trends. Reducing these frequent slips will significantly improve the clarity and professional tone of your writing.
