Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all key features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points for the five activities. You have successfully identified the most popular activity (film club) and the most significant growth (table tennis), as well as the decline in amateur dramatics. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the main trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, double-check the figures for 2000 to ensure they align perfectly with the visual data provided. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group the information effectively. You use cohesive devices such as 'in contrast', 'by contrast', and 'while' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing and flow could be improved by ensuring that transitions between sentences are more varied. Some sentences feel slightly repetitive in structure. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the information is easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'substantial decline', 'fluctuated slightly', and 'rising sharply'. There are some minor errors, such as 'polular' (spelling) and the repetition of words like 'staying' and 'participants'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would help elevate the score. The range is functional and allows for clear communication of the data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several punctuation and capitalization errors, such as failing to capitalize 'Melbourne', 'Australia', and the start of sentences. Additionally, there are minor grammatical slips like 'the film club most remained the most popular' and 'martial and 25 for amateur dramatics' (missing the noun 'arts'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on proofreading for basic mechanics would be beneficial.
