Student answer (Band 7.0)

The provided line graph illustrates the numbers of participants in five different activities at a social center in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, it can be seen that the number of participants in film club was consistently the highest over the period. While table tennis increased over time, amateur dramatics had the biggest decline.

In 2000, the number of participants in film club stood at over 60 participants and climbed to approximately 70 participants in 2020, which was the highest in that category, whereas table tennis stood at below 20 participants in 2000 and surged to about 42 participants in 2015, before reaching to above 50 participants in 2020.

Meanwhile, martial arts fluctuated considerably, starting with a figure of around 38 participants in 2000 and ending with the same figure in 2020, while amateur dramatics recorded about 28 participants in 2000, before decreasing steadily to below 10 participants in 2020, making it the least number of participants among all activities. By contrast, musical performances stood just below 10 participants in 2005, surpassing amateur dramatics in 2015, before reaching to approximately 20 participants in 2000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points. You successfully identified the highest category (film club) and the declining trend (amateur dramatics). However, there is a factual error in the final sentence where you state musical performances reached 20 participants in 2000, whereas the graph shows this activity did not begin until 2005. Additionally, the comparison of musical performances is slightly confusing. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurately transcribed and that comparisons between categories are clearly linked to the specific years provided in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'By contrast', and 'whereas' helps to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different trends. However, the progression within the final paragraph is slightly disjointed due to the factual error regarding the timeline of musical performances. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner, and the relationship between the different activities is generally well-managed.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'surged', 'fluctuated considerably', and 'decreasing steadily'. These choices are appropriate for an academic report. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary used is precise enough to convey the intended meaning. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'participants' or 'numbers' to avoid repetition, and ensure that collocations like 'least number of participants' are used more naturally (e.g., 'lowest number of participants').

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. You demonstrate good control over tense usage, primarily using the past tense to describe the historical data. There are a few minor errors, such as 'reaching to above 50' (the preposition 'to' is unnecessary after 'reaching') and 'making it the least number of participants' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Despite these minor slips, the grammar is generally accurate and does not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which supports a solid band 7 score.
