Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the main features but fails to provide a clear or accurate overview. The data reporting is inconsistent and contains significant inaccuracies, such as stating that participants in martial arts 'remained same' when the graph shows a decline, or mentioning a value of '0' in 2005 which is not supported by the visual data. Furthermore, the final sentence is incomplete, leaving the task unfinished. Key features are not highlighted effectively, and the lack of precision in describing trends (e.g., 'fluctuated and slightly increased and receding') makes the information difficult to follow. To improve, ensure all data points are accurately transcribed and provide a more cohesive summary of the overall trends.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hampered by awkward phrasing and unclear referencing. While some cohesive devices like 'In 2000' and 'However' are used, they are often followed by disjointed or confusing information. The progression of ideas is not always clear, particularly in the final paragraph where the sentence structure breaks down. The use of referencing is sometimes mechanical, and the lack of a concluding sentence or a clear summary makes the overall structure feel incomplete. Improving the use of linking words to connect trends rather than just listing years would significantly enhance the coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'number of participants' and 'rose'. There are several instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'receding' to describe a trend, which is not standard collocation in this context. Some phrasing is awkward, such as 'reached at significantly 20'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the data with the necessary precision required for an Academic Task 1 report. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate a wider variety of verbs and adverbs to describe trends, such as 'plummeted', 'gradual increase', or 'remained stable'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'numbers of participants... were fluctuated') and incorrect preposition usage (e.g., 'reached at significantly 20'). Sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors or run-on phrases. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and awkward sentence construction. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence patterns and ensuring that subjects and verbs agree. Reducing the number of errors in simple structures should be the priority before attempting more complex grammatical forms.
