Student answer (Band 8.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants who took part in five different activities at a social centre in Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the film club was the most popular activity throughout the period, although its participation figures changed slightly. In contrast, table tennis experienced the most significant growth and became the second most popular activity by 2020. Meanwhile, participation in amateur dramatics declined considerably, while musical performances increased gradually.

In 2000, around 64 people participated in the film club, making it the most popular activity. This figure fell slightly to about 60 in 2010 before rising again to approximately 66 in 2020. Martial arts started at around 36 participants and fluctuated over the period, reaching a peak of about 38 in 2010 before ending at roughly 36 in 2020.

Table tennis had about 16 participants in 2000 and increased moderately to 20 in 2005 and 2010. However, its popularity then rose sharply, reaching around 35 participants in 2015 and 54 in 2020. On the other hand, amateur dramatics increased slightly from 26 to 28 participants between 2000 and 2005, but then fell steadily to only 6 by 2020.

Finally, musical performances had no participants in 2000 and 2005. However, the number rose to around 12 in 2010, followed by a further increase to 16 in 2015 and 18 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully selected key data points to illustrate these changes. The comparison between activities is well-handled, particularly the contrast between the growth of table tennis and the decline of amateur dramatics. The data is accurate and supports the summary well. To reach a higher band, ensure that the 'main features' are highlighted even more distinctly in the overview, perhaps by explicitly grouping the activities by their overall trajectory (e.g., those that grew versus those that declined or remained stable).

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific set of data, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used a good range of cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Meanwhile', 'However', and 'On the other hand' to link sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth throughout the text. The use of referencing is clear, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive linking.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends and figures accurately. Phrases like 'experienced the most significant growth', 'declined considerably', and 'rose sharply' demonstrate a good command of academic language suitable for a report. There is a good level of precision in your word choice, and you avoid repetition by using varied verbs and adverbs. The vocabulary is natural and fits the context of the task perfectly. There are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('although its participation figures changed slightly') and participial phrases. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over tense usage (past simple for the period 2000–2020) is consistent and accurate. Punctuation is used correctly to support the clarity of your writing. The grammatical control is strong, and the few minor slips that might occur are not present here, indicating a high level of accuracy.
