Student answer (Band 5.0)

the graph shows the relation between the number of participants and different activities during year 2000 to 2020. they participated in activities like film club, Martial arts, Amateur dramatics, Table tennis and Musical Performances. in 2000s, About 17 participants were interested in table tennis, almost 37 persons were participating in Amateur dramatics, less than 40 people participated in Martial Arts and Finally less than 65 people participated in film club. what's most astonishing is that zero people were not interested in Musical Performances at all but over time, starting exactly from year 2005, numbers of participants in that activity has risen from zero to almost 20 people till 2020s, which is quite a weak number compared to other activities. A sport like table tennis has reached a low point in year 2010 with just 20 participants but continued to rise till 2020s to nearly three times its number of participants in 2010s. An activity like film club was the favorite one for the Australian Participants as it almost didn't go below 60 participants in those twenty years starting from 2000s.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the graph, including the trends for all activities. However, the overview is missing; a clear summary of the overall trends (e.g., the general popularity of the film club versus the emergence of musical performances) should be presented in the introduction or as a separate paragraph. The data reporting is generally accurate, though the phrasing 'zero people were not interested' is confusing and logically flawed. To reach a higher band, ensure that the main trends are highlighted clearly rather than just listing data points for each year.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is presented as a single block of text, which significantly hinders readability and logical progression. IELTS Task 1 responses should be structured into distinct paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs for detailed comparisons. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'Finally', 'over time'), the lack of paragraphing makes the flow feel mechanical and disjointed. Improving the structure by grouping related information and using clear paragraph breaks is essential for a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There is a reliance on basic descriptors like 'weak number' and 'favorite one'. Some phrasing is unnatural, such as 'zero people were not interested' (which implies everyone was interested) and 'till 2020s'. To improve, you should use more precise academic terminology for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a significant increase'. Expanding your range of collocations will help convey information more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in punctuation and capitalization (e.g., 'year 2000', '2000s', 'Martial arts'). The use of articles and prepositions is inconsistent, such as 'in year 2010' instead of 'in 2010'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focusing on consistent capitalization and correct preposition usage will improve the overall accuracy of your writing.
