Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line chart illustrates the total number of attendees at a social center in five categories in the city of Melbourne, Australia, over the period of two decades from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it is evident that film club participation was the most dominant activity throughout the period. However, the dramatic category's average participation shows a downward trend. Moreover, other activities represent upward trends with mild volatility.

In the year 2000, the film club had the highest number of participants, at about 65, which rose to 70 in 2020, being a substantial number of participants among all other categories in the following years. Amateur dramatics participation shows a significant decline from the starting year; its total number was just above 25 and remained stable until 2005. In 2020, it had the lowest number of participants, at below 10.

Conversely, table tennis participation rose dramatically from the year 2010, increasing from around 16 participants to 50 in the last year of the period.

Additionally, Martial arts participation reflects fluctuations throughout the whole period, roughly remaining between 35 and 40. While medical activity rose to about 15 from the lowest number of participants among all.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively identifies the main features of the graph, including the dominant trend of the film club and the decline in amateur dramatics. You have successfully selected key data points to support your descriptions. However, the overview could be more comprehensive; while you mention trends, you could better highlight the most significant contrast or the overall change in total participation. The description of the medical activity is slightly unclear, as the phrase 'rose to about 15 from the lowest number' is ambiguous regarding the starting point. Overall, the task is well-addressed with clear reporting of trends and relevant comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by category. Cohesive devices such as 'Conversely', 'Additionally', and 'However' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas. The referencing is generally clear, although the final sentence regarding 'medical activity' feels slightly disconnected from the preceding analysis of other categories. Overall, the flow of information is smooth and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'most dominant activity', 'substantial number', and 'mild volatility' are used effectively. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which adds to the academic tone of the report. While there are no major errors in word choice, some phrasing could be more natural, such as 'the dramatic category's average participation', which might be better expressed as 'participation in amateur dramatics'. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the opening sentence and the comparison in the final paragraph. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are minor issues, such as the slightly awkward phrasing in the final sentence ('While medical activity rose to about 15 from the lowest number of participants among all'), which lacks a clear main clause. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Punctuation is generally handled well throughout the text.
