Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given map illustrates the data about different tasks which include the different number of individuals at one social centre at Melbourne, Australia during the past 20 years.

Overall, in film club and martial art sectors, we saw a constant increase in individuals which was below the 70 and 40. Amateur dramatics and table tennis had a nearly 20 members during the starting year and showed different results in the last year. Meanwhile, the musical performances came into an existence in 2005, and showed a slight increase during the last year.

The first two categories statistically stable during the past 20 years. In 2001, the Individuals were above the 60 and 30 customers, and during end year, they were slightly below from 70 and 40 people. The musical performances activities come into existence during 2005 and 2010, but during the following years, dramatic variation was not seen and only 20 participants were there in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task and identifies the main trends. However, the reporting of data is often imprecise. For example, stating 'below 70 and 40' is vague, and the description of the musical performances is confusing, as you mention they came into existence in 2005 and 2010. The summary of the amateur dramatics and table tennis trends is also slightly disjointed. To improve, ensure that data points are clearly linked to specific years and that the comparisons between categories are more direct. The overview is present but lacks the clarity needed to highlight the most significant differences between the activities effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression of ideas is frequently interrupted by awkward phrasing and unclear referencing. For instance, the phrase 'The first two categories statistically stable' lacks a verb, and the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is mechanical. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often applied incorrectly or in a way that makes the sentences feel disjointed. Improving the use of linking words such as 'consequently', 'in contrast', or 'furthermore' would help the reader follow your argument more smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. You rely on repetitive phrasing such as 'came into existence' and 'individuals'. There are also some errors in word choice, such as 'tasks' instead of 'activities' and 'customers' instead of 'participants'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there is little evidence of less common lexical items or sophisticated collocations. To reach a higher band, try to use more varied synonyms for 'increase' (e.g., 'rose', 'climbed', 'surged') and 'decrease' (e.g., 'declined', 'dropped').

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There is a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. Frequent grammatical errors, such as 'The first two categories statistically stable' (missing verb) and 'dramatic change occur' (incorrect tense), hinder the flow. You also struggle with prepositions and articles, such as 'below from 70' and 'the musical performances activities'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve the quality of your writing.
