Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph illustrates the information regarding the number of participants for five different activities in Melbourne, Australia, at one social centre from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the film club remained the most popular activity throughout the period, whereas participation in amateur dramatics declined considerably. In contrast, table tennis and musical performances experienced an upward trend, while participation in martial arts fluctuated over the period.
An analysis of the graph reveals that the film club accounted for around 64 participants in 2000, before falling to 60 participants in 2010. By 2020, the figure had risen again to approximately 64 participants. Moreover, martial arts recorded nearly 38 participants in 2000, before falling to around 31 participants in 2005, whereas it increased gradually to 40 participants by 2010; later, in 2020, the figure again rose to 38 participants.
From the image, it is evident that table tennis recorded 18 participants in 200, and this figure experienced a dramatic increase over the period, where it accounted for nearly 55 participants by 2020. In addition, nearly 28 participants participated in amateur dramatics in 2000, and this figure rose slightly to 30participants by 2005. But this figure was surpassed by table tennis in 2010, and this figure declined sharply to around 4 participants by 2020. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all requirements of the task. You have identified the main trends and provided relevant data points to support your descriptions. The overview clearly highlights the key features, such as the film club's popularity and the contrasting trends between table tennis and amateur dramatics. The data is generally accurate, and you have made appropriate comparisons between the activities. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the specific years mentioned in the graph, as there was a minor ambiguity regarding the starting year for table tennis (written as '200' instead of '2000').
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group the information effectively. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'in contrast', 'moreover', 'whereas', and 'initially' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different trends. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing is generally clear. To improve, ensure that cohesive devices are used with complete precision; for instance, the transition between the discussion of amateur dramatics and musical performances could be slightly more fluid.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'upward trend', 'fluctuated over the period', and 'surpassed by' are used effectively. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which adds to the clarity of the report. However, there are minor errors, such as the typo '200' instead of '2000' and the missing space in '30participants'. These are minor slips rather than systematic errors. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'participants' or 'figure' to avoid repetition.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses starting with 'while' or 'whereas'. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally controlled. Punctuation is mostly accurate, though there are minor slips like the missing space mentioned previously. The control of tense is consistent, appropriately using the past tense to describe the historical data. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice constructions or more sophisticated participle phrases, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
