Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, identifying the film club as the most popular and amateur dramatics as the least. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and contains inaccuracies. For instance, stating that martial arts had the 'same rate as 40' is unclear, and the description of trends is inconsistent. The overview is present but lacks a clear summary of the most significant trends, such as the growth in table tennis versus the decline in amateur dramatics. To improve, ensure that data points are described with precision and that the overall trends are clearly distinguished from individual data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate, such as the use of 'furthermore' to connect unrelated ideas. The progression of ideas within paragraphs is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the second body paragraph where the transition between different activities feels abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the logical flow of the essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'highest declined' and 'the third rate'. The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on basic descriptors rather than more sophisticated terms related to data analysis. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations for describing trends, such as 'experienced a significant decline' instead of 'highest declined', and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Subject-verb agreement issues are common, such as 'The line graph illustrate' and 'film club has the highest rate'. Additionally, there are errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'a table tennis' and 'in the 4 activities'. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would be highly beneficial.
