Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, identifying the most popular and least popular activities. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you mention the growth of table tennis and musical performances, the description lacks specific data points to support these trends, which is essential for an Academic Task 1 response. Furthermore, the reference to the graph as a 'bar graph' is inaccurate, as it is a line graph. To improve, ensure you include specific figures (e.g., 'starting at 20 participants in 2000') to substantiate your claims and provide a more precise overview of the data trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into short paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical. Phrases like 'Most dominating one is' and 'Hopefully table tenis is going to' feel informal and do not effectively link ideas in a formal academic manner. The progression of ideas is clear, but the transition between the overview and the specific details could be smoother. Using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'furthermore') would improve the flow and logical connection between sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate to convey the main points, but it lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are several spelling errors, such as 'particaptes' instead of 'participating' and 'tenis' instead of 'tennis'. Additionally, the word choice is occasionally imprecise or informal, such as 'great response' or 'great downfall'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more academic collocations and ensure accurate spelling. Avoid informal phrasing like 'Hopefully' when describing data trends, as this is not appropriate for an objective report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'the different number of people particaptes' is grammatically incorrect, and 'musical performances start later' should be in the past tense ('started'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors in basic verb tense and subject-verb agreement prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on consistent tense usage and sentence structure accuracy is recommended.
