Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the graph, such as the dominance of the Film Club and the decline of amateur dramatics. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary paragraph, which is essential for a Band 6 or higher. The data reporting is sometimes inaccurate or confusing, such as the claim that table tennis reaches 55 and 20 participants simultaneously in 2020. Furthermore, the inclusion of personal opinions like 'Hopefully table tenis is going to compete' is inappropriate for an academic report, which should remain objective and analytical. To improve, ensure you provide a clear summary of trends and avoid subjective commentary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into short paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas; sentences often feel disjointed. For example, the transition between the description of the Film Club and the prediction about table tennis is abrupt. Referencing is also inconsistent, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison of trends over the 20-year period. To improve, use linking words such as 'in contrast', 'furthermore', or 'consequently' to connect your observations and ensure each paragraph has a clear thematic focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'dominating', 'constant', and 'great'. There are several spelling errors, such as 'particaptes', 'tabe tenis', 'amature', and 'intrested', which distract the reader. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe trends with precision; for instance, instead of 'great downfall', a more academic choice would be 'significant decline'. The use of 'hopefully' is stylistically inappropriate for this task type. Expanding your range of synonyms for describing trends (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'plummeted') will help improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('musical performances start', 'table tenis reaches'), missing articles ('in 2020 tabe tenis reaches'), and incorrect tense usage. Sentence structures are mostly simple, with limited attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalisation. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and proofreading for common errors like missing articles and spelling mistakes before submitting your work.
