Student answer (Band 6.0)

The rendered line graph illustrates the data of contestants for various tasks at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 to 2020.

At first glance, it is crystal clear that the figures of table tennis players slightly soared from around 17 in 2000 to 20 in 2005, further the number grew rapidly to about 55 in 2020. Meanwhile, the ratio of participants in amateur dramatics rapidly decreased from 25 in 2000 to less than 10 in 2020.

Further analysis reveals that the number of contestants of film club and martial arts ,showed a stagnant trend in the given time period around 65 and 46 respectively.

Overall, it is readily apparent that the maximum competitors took part in film club over the given years whereas, no people participated in musical performance at first but the minimum amount of people took part in amateur dramatics during 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the graph, including trends for table tennis and amateur dramatics. However, the analysis of the film club and martial arts is inaccurate; you described them as 'stagnant' at 65 and 46, whereas the graph shows fluctuations. Furthermore, the mention of 'musical performance' is confusing as it is not clearly defined in the data provided. The response is also slightly under the 150-word minimum, which limits the depth of your analysis. To improve, ensure you accurately report the data points and provide a more comprehensive overview of the trends rather than just listing figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'Meanwhile' and 'Overall' to transition between ideas. However, the logical progression is occasionally hindered by the inaccurate reporting of data, such as the claim about musical performance. The use of referencing is sometimes mechanical, and the flow between the body paragraphs could be smoother. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus that directly relates to the data presented.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'soared', 'rapidly decreased', and 'stagnant trend'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as using 'contestants' for social centre activities, where 'participants' or 'members' would be more appropriate. Additionally, the phrase 'no people participated' is slightly unnatural. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, you should aim to incorporate more precise collocations and topic-specific terminology to move beyond basic descriptions and improve the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the figures of table tennis players' (which should refer to the number of participants) and punctuation issues, specifically the unnecessary comma before 'showed' in the third paragraph. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your sentence structures are varied and punctuated correctly to enhance the overall clarity and professional tone of your report.
