IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line chart shows the ever-changing amount of people participating in various activities at a Melbourne social center every five year from 2000.
Overall, there are five different activities recorded in this chart and the information is consistently updated every five year from the year of 2000 to 2020.
There are several prominent trends can be observed from the graph. Firstly, the number of film club enthusiast seems to be the highest and most steady compared to the other activities, with just over 60 people regularly attending the club since 2000. A similar consistent trend is also recorded for the martial arts attendees, however, the number is not as high as the film club with roughly less than 40 participants since 2000.
The table tennis attracts the double amount of participants in a span of five years since 2010 and the number keeps growing to 50 people by 2020. Another significant increase can be seen for musical performances where there were no participants in 2000 and by 2020 the number sits at close to 20 people after experiencing a steady growth. As for amateur dramatics, the data shows a decline from more than 10 participants in 2000 and close to none in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task well. You have successfully identified the main trends and provided relevant comparisons, such as contrasting the stability of the film club with the decline in amateur dramatics. The overview is clear and highlights the key features of the data. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with precision; for instance, when mentioning the table tennis growth, specifying the starting and ending figures would provide a more complete picture. Overall, the information is well-selected and effectively reported.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group the activities by their trends. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'A similar consistent trend', and 'As for' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the text. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, in the second paragraph, the phrase 'the information is consistently updated' is slightly repetitive and could be integrated more smoothly into the introduction.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'prominent trends', 'steady growth', and 'regularly attending' are used appropriately. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'amount of people' (should be 'number of people') and 'film club enthusiast' (should be plural 'enthusiasts'). While these errors do not impede communication, refining your use of countable/uncountable nouns and pluralization will help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'every five year' (should be 'every five years') and 'the number of film club enthusiast seems' (should be 'enthusiasts seem'). Additionally, 'the table tennis attracts the double amount' is slightly awkward; 'the number of participants in table tennis doubled' would be more natural. Despite these errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the mistakes do not cause difficulty for the reader.
