Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. While you have identified some main features, the analysis is incomplete and lacks sufficient detail. Several data points are missing or described inaccurately, such as the confusion regarding years (e.g., mentioning 2010 multiple times for different activities). The overview is present but lacks the depth required to fully summarise the trends over the 20-year period. To improve, ensure you cover all categories provided in the graph and provide a more comprehensive analysis of the trends rather than just listing isolated figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive start. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by the lack of sufficient content and some confusing sentence structures. Cohesive devices are used sparingly and sometimes incorrectly, such as the abrupt transition in the final paragraph. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the different activities. To improve, use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast', 'subsequently', 'meanwhile') to connect your ideas more fluidly and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, logical focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision expected for an Academic Task 1 response. You rely on simple descriptors like 'increased' and 'remains stable'. There is a lack of variety in how you describe trends, and some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'modestly change'. To reach a higher band, incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained constant', or 'experienced a significant surge'. Additionally, ensure your terminology is precise when referring to data points.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'Number of participants in film club starts with 65' should be 'The number of participants in the film club started at 65'. There are also issues with tense consistency, as you mix present and past tenses when describing historical data. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of complex sentence structures and ensure your verb tenses are consistent when describing past trends. Proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement errors will also help improve your score.
