Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graph illustrates information about numbers of participants participated in different activities in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020

Overall, there are several key aspects in graph one major change was seen in Table tennis which arose about double and one in Amateur dramatics which undergone significant decrease. Hence, this participance of people reflect the interested field of majority shifted as time.

Film club and Martial arts were the two who don't went under major changes where as people showed great interest in music activities reflected upward.

Furthermore, these changes describe the change of people mindset according to time in few activities whereas one or two activities doesn't face that massive changes. There could be few reason of changes that young people of new era likely more interested in indoor activities rather than the outdoor. One major thing that is observable is that performing as a movie star is a great option choosen by majority.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the graph but fails to provide a clear, accurate overview of the data. While it identifies some trends, the descriptions are often vague or inaccurate (e.g., stating Table tennis 'arose about double' when the data shows a different trend). Crucially, the response includes subjective speculation about why people's mindsets changed and why young people prefer indoor activities; this is not required for an Academic Task 1 report, which should focus strictly on reporting the data provided. The lack of specific data points (numbers/years) makes the summary ineffective.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical flow is weak. The transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is disjointed. While some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'Overall' are used, they are often placed awkwardly or used to introduce irrelevant commentary rather than data analysis. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the progression of ideas does not follow a standard analytical structure, making it difficult for the reader to follow the trends being described.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often imprecise. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and incorrect word forms, such as 'participance of people', 'don't went under', and 'choosen'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe trends accurately; for example, using 'arose' to describe a numerical increase is not appropriate in this context. The student struggles to use precise terminology for describing graphs, which limits the ability to convey the information clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('activities doesn't face'), tense usage ('which undergone'), and sentence structure ('there could be few reason of changes'). The range of structures is limited, and the errors are persistent throughout the text. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of basic errors in syntax and morphology prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
