The line graph illustrates the number of participants in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, the film club remained the most popular activity throughout the period, despite a slight fluctuation. Table tennis experienced the most significant growth, while amateur dramatics declined considerably. Meanwhile, participation in musical performances increased after 2005, whereas the number of people involved in martial arts fluctuated.
In 2000, approximately 65 people participated in the film club, compared with around 35 for martial arts and 25 for amateur dramatics. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the trends and selected key data points to support your descriptions. The comparison between activities is well-handled, particularly the contrast between the growth of table tennis and the decline of amateur dramatics. The data is accurately reported, and the main features are highlighted appropriately. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview is even more integrated, perhaps by grouping the activities by their overall trajectory (e.g., those that grew versus those that declined or fluctuated) to provide a more analytical summary of the trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from the introduction to the overview, and then into specific data groupings. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Meanwhile', and 'before rising again' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall readability of the report. The flow is smooth, and the information is presented in a way that is easy to follow, demonstrating a high level of control over the structure of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends and data points accurately. Phrases such as 'remained the most popular', 'experienced the most significant growth', and 'rising sharply' demonstrate a good command of language appropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. The vocabulary is precise and used naturally throughout the text. While the range is good, incorporating a few more sophisticated or varied synonyms for 'increased' or 'decreased' could further enhance the lexical variety. Overall, the vocabulary is accurate and effectively conveys the information without any noticeable errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('while participation in musical performances increased after 2005') and participial phrases. The majority of sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is consistent. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you could experiment with a wider range of complex sentence structures, such as using more passive voice constructions or varied introductory clauses to further demonstrate grammatical flexibility.
