Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph compares the numbers of participants involved in five activities (Film club, Martial arts, Amateur dramatics, Table tennis, Musical performances) at a social center in Melbourne between 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the Film club remained the most popular activity throughout the period, while Table tennis saw the most dramatic increase. In contrast, participation in Amateur dramatics decreased significantly.

In 2000, Film club had the highest number of participants about 65 and decreased to 60 by 2005 but then rose again to peak at approximately 68 in 2020. Marital arts started at 35 participants in 2000, fluctuated moderately, ending at a similar level of around 37 in 2020.

Table tennis showed the sharpest growth. It began only with 15 participants, remain stable until 2010 and than showed a fastest growth reached to a level of about 55 participants by 2020, making it in the second most popular activity.

Musical performances were not offered at all in 2000 and 2005. However, they were introduced after 2005 and grew steadily to about 20 participants by 2020.

In contrast, Amateur dramatics was the only activity to decline. It was started at 28 participants in 2000, peaked at 20 in 2005 and then fall sharply to just 7 by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all key features of the graph. You have successfully identified the main trends, such as the Film club's dominance and the sharp growth in Table tennis participation. The comparisons are relevant and clear, particularly the contrast between the growth of Table tennis and the decline of Amateur dramatics. The overview is concise and accurately reflects the data. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with complete precision; for instance, the statement that Amateur dramatics 'peaked at 20 in 2005' is slightly confusing given the context of a decline, and checking the specific figures against the graph ensures total accuracy.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group the activities effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'However', and 'while' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used well to separate the different trends. The progression of ideas is clear throughout the text. To improve further, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'making it in the second most popular' contains a minor grammatical error that slightly disrupts the flow of the sentence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated moderately', 'sharpest growth', and 'decline significantly'. The language is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are a few minor errors, such as 'Marital arts' (likely a typo for Martial arts) and 'than showed a fastest growth' (should be 'then showed the fastest growth'). These errors do not impede communication, but addressing them would demonstrate more consistent control over word choice and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear and accurate, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'It was started at 28' (should be 'It started at 28') and 'fall sharply' (should be 'fell sharply' to maintain past tense consistency). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'the second most popular' vs 'in the second most popular'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the range of structures is adequate for the task.
