Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the graph, such as the dominance of the film club and the trends for table tennis and amateur dramatics. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, the description of the martial arts category is vague, stating it 'followed the trend of increase in some year and also decrease in upcoming years', which lacks precision regarding the actual data points. Additionally, the report lacks a clear, data-driven overview of the starting and ending points for all categories. To improve, ensure that specific figures are used to support comparisons and that the overview provides a more comprehensive summary of the overall trends observed across the entire period.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. For example, the phrase 'in upcoming years' is used repetitively, and the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is abrupt. Some sentences lack logical flow, such as the final sentence regarding future trends, which is speculative and not supported by the data provided. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'the film club category follow the trend most' and 'musical performances category make the entry'. The student relies on basic verbs like 'increase' and 'decrease' repeatedly. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise academic vocabulary, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a downward trend', and ensure that collocations are used correctly to convey information more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Subject-verb agreement is a recurring issue, seen in phrases like 'the line graph compare', 'the table tennis have', and 'the martial arts participants was'. There are also errors in tense usage, such as 'has also rise' instead of 'has also risen'. While the student attempts some complex sentence structures, they are often marred by these errors. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, will significantly improve the clarity and quality of the writing.
