Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates several activities and the share of participants doing said activities. The data was collected from 2000 to 2020 and comes from a social centre located in Melbourne, Australia. The X axis is measured in years while the Y is measured in number of participants.

Overall, both film club and martial arts remained steady in the number of participants doing those activities. While on the other hand, amateur dramatics and table tennis moved in opposite directions. While they both were steady for a period of time, ping-pong rose significantly while amateur dramatics dropped quite a bit. As for musical performances, even tho there is no data prior to 2005 the trend keeps growing steadily.

The number of participations for film club in 2000 was between 60 to 70 in the 2000 and remained mostly the same in 2020. The same can be said for amateur dramatics, while the line shows a bit more variation the last data from 2020 remains mostly the same as 2000, which is close to 40 participants. As for Amateur dramatics we can see a lost of interest starting in 2005 while it had close to 30 participants to lower than 10 in 2020. Ping-pong started just below 20 participants and rose sharply starting in 2010, which is also a key year for amateur dramatics.

Regarding musical performances, the activity emerged in 2005 and there is a slow upward trend reaching almost 20 participants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the trends for each activity. You successfully identified the main movements, such as the stability of the film club and the sharp rise in table tennis. However, there are some inconsistencies in your reporting; for example, you mention amateur dramatics twice with conflicting information, and you incorrectly state that the film club remained steady when the data shows a decline. To improve, ensure that your data points are accurate and that you do not repeat information. The overview is clear, but the supporting details require more precision to fully meet the requirements of a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'While on the other hand', and 'Regarding', which help the flow of information. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally hindered by repetitive phrasing and some awkward transitions. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus without repeating data points already mentioned in previous sections.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'steady', 'rose significantly', and 'upward trend'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'participations' instead of 'participants' or 'participation', and 'ping-pong' (which is informal; 'table tennis' is preferred in an academic context). There is also a minor spelling error ('tho' instead of 'though'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and ensure that your word choices are consistently formal and accurate throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the share of participants doing said activities' (awkward phrasing) and 'there is a lost of interest' (should be 'loss'). Additionally, some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'The number of participations for film club in 2000 was between 60 to 70 in the 2000'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and refining your sentence structure for better clarity.
