Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given line graph illustrates the numbers of people who took part in different activities at one social center in Melbourne, Australia from the year 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the film club was the most popular activity among people. The Table tennis and the Musical performances had increased over time, however the Amateur dramatics showed downward trend. The Marital arts was quite famous and remained stable throughout the period.

In 2000, the Film club was the most popular activity with the highest numbers of participants, at around 65 and this figure continued to remain unchanged throughout the periods except a minor fluctuation in 2010. Similarly, the Martial arts had around 35 participants in 2000 and that number plateaued until 2020. In contrast, the Musical performances were least popular with no people at all, however the numbers stated to rise from 2005 and made up around 15 people at the end.

In 2000, approximately 25 people participated in the Amateur dramatics. It had increased steadily until 2005 and then decreased to around 18 people by 2010. That figure further declined dramatically to around 5 people in 2020, making it least popular among the people. In contrast, the Table tennis showed an upward trend from 2000 to 2010 at around 20 people, which later surpassed the Amateur dramatics and peaked around 50 people, being a popular activity in the social center after the Film club.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all categories and made relevant comparisons, such as noting the Film club's dominance and the contrasting trends between Table tennis and Amateur dramatics. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you stated the Film club remained unchanged, but the graph shows a slight decline toward the end. Additionally, you mentioned Musical performances started at zero, but the graph indicates a starting point of approximately 5. To improve, ensure that data points are read with greater precision and that the overview highlights the most significant shifts more clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on specific trends. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Similarly', and 'Overall' to guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, but the connection between the overview and the detailed body paragraphs could be more seamless. Overall, the structure is effective and supports the clear communication of the data.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. You use appropriate terms like 'plateaued', 'fluctuation', 'upward trend', and 'surpassed'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'Marital arts' (likely a typo for Martial arts) and 'numbers stated to rise' (should be 'started'). While you use some less common vocabulary, there is room to incorporate more precise academic collocations to describe trends. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the numbers of people' (should be 'the number of people') and 'the Table tennis' (the definite article is unnecessary here). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'at around 20 people' when describing a trend. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. To reach a higher band, focus on refining subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles with plural nouns.
