Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully selected key data points to support your descriptions. The comparison between activities is well-integrated, such as noting the contrast between the growth of table tennis and the decline of amateur dramatics. The data is accurately reported, and the inclusion of specific figures (e.g., '64', '36', '54') demonstrates a strong grasp of the information presented in the graph. The response is well-structured and covers the entire period from 2000 to 2020 effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from the introduction and overview to detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'In contrast', 'whereas', and 'By contrast', which help the reader follow the comparisons between different activities. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the specific data analysis. The flow of information is smooth, and referencing is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends and data points accurately. Phrases like 'experienced the most significant growth', 'declined steadily', and 'climbing sharply' are precise and appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. There is a good awareness of collocation, and the vocabulary is used naturally to convey the information. While the range is solid, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or varied ways to describe fluctuations could elevate the score further, but the current usage is precise and error-free.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of relative clauses ('which had no participants') and participial phrases. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the control over grammar and punctuation is strong. There are no significant errors that impede communication. The use of tense is consistent, appropriately shifting between past and present to describe the historical data and the state of the activities at the end of the period.
