Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points for the three activities. However, the reporting of data is occasionally inaccurate; for example, you mention amateur dramatics began at 26 in 2000, but the graph shows it starting higher, and your description of the decline starting in 2005 is not fully supported by the visual data. While you identify the key trends, the lack of precision in data reporting prevents a higher score. To improve, ensure that your data points are read carefully from the axes and that you make more explicit comparisons between the activities rather than just listing them individually.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs for the specific details. There is a clear progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'On the other hand' and 'Onwards' are used, but the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes slightly unclear, such as the transition into the final paragraph regarding musical performances. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used naturally will help elevate the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'participating', and 'dramatically'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'figures of participants' (should be 'number of participants') and 'musical performances activity has no participant' (should be 'had no participants'). There is also a minor error in 'community centre' (should be plural 'centres' or singular with 'a'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focus on learning common collocations related to data description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'one of Melbourne's community centre' (should be 'centres'), 'figures... were approximately 26' (should be 'the figure was'), 'begun declining' (should be 'began'), and 'reached at around' (should be 'reached around'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of verb tenses when describing past trends to improve your accuracy.
