Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph given below provides us with information about the number of participants involved in different activities at one social centre in Melbourne in a twenty year period from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the film club accounted for the majority of the participants. Amateur dramatics faced a subtle downfall while the table tennis underwent an incredible growth.

Initially, talking about the film club it had the greatest number of members nearly 65 in 2000 and the attendance remained roughly stable with 67 in 2020.

Musical performances had no member till 2005 but the participants surged to 18 in 2020.

Martial was quite popular too with 38 participants in 2000 after which it faced a slight downfall but again it kept it pace in 2020 with 38 members.

In spark contrast, table tennis had 27 members in the start with number declining in 2010 but it dramatically increased in 2015 and reaching its peak in 2010 with 55 participants in 2020. Amateur dramatics had nearly 19 people in 2010 but then plummeted to zero in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the trends for all five activities. You successfully identified the main trends, such as the stability of the film club and the decline of amateur dramatics. However, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting; for instance, you mention the table tennis peak in 2010, but the graph shows the peak in 2020. Additionally, the description of the martial arts trend is slightly confusing. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurately transcribed and that the overview clearly highlights the most significant differences between the start and end periods.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'Initially', and 'In spark contrast' (though 'spark' is a spelling error). However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by grouping the activities more effectively—perhaps by those that increased versus those that decreased. The referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the discussion of different activities feels a bit disjointed at times, which prevents the response from achieving a higher score for cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'subtle downfall', 'surged', and 'plummeted'. However, there are some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'kept it pace' (kept its pace) and 'In spark contrast' (In stark contrast). There is also a minor issue with the repetition of 'participants' and 'members'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your spelling is accurate, as these small errors slightly detract from the overall professional tone of the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'had no member till 2005' (should be 'members') and 'reaching its peak in 2010 with 55 participants in 2020' (the date is contradictory). There are also minor punctuation and article errors throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching the 7.0 band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
