Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends for each activity. However, the reporting of data is occasionally inaccurate or confusing. For example, stating that the Film club 'gradually decrease' and then 'marginally showed by 65' is unclear and mathematically imprecise. Similarly, the description of Amateur dramatics dropping by 10 is not clearly supported by the graph's trajectory. While the overview captures the general movement of the activities, the lack of precision in data reporting and some misinterpretations of the trends prevent this from reaching a higher band. The response would benefit from a more careful selection of key data points to support the comparisons made.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'Table tennis showed up' and 'Musical performances started with zero member' are awkward and disrupt the flow. The progression of ideas within paragraphs is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the second and third paragraphs where the transition between different activities feels abrupt. While there is an overall attempt at a logical structure, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the repetitive sentence starters limit the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher score. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'competitors of varied activities' instead of 'participants in various activities' and 'showed up' instead of 'commenced' or 'recorded'. Spelling errors are also present, such as 'c;laases', 'dramactically', 'incresed', 'smalll', and 'Muscial'. These errors, while not always impeding communication, are frequent enough to suggest a limited range of vocabulary and a lack of control over word formation and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are attempts at complex sentences, they are often marred by grammatical errors, such as 'Film club was most popular activity started with 65 participants' (missing articles and relative pronouns) and 'participants was dramactically dropped' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary semicolons and missing commas. The frequency of these errors, particularly with verb tenses and articles, indicates that the writer has not yet mastered complex structures, and the errors are noticeable throughout the text.
