Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response provides a clear overview of the main trends, such as the Film club being the most popular activity and the decline in Amateur dramatics. However, the reporting of data is often inaccurate or confusing. For example, stating that 'there were no increased players by 2010' for table tennis is unclear, and the description of Martial arts as 'constant by increasing and decreasing' is contradictory. While the main features are identified, the lack of precision in describing the data points and the failure to make meaningful comparisons between the activities limits the score. The response covers all parts of the task, but the analysis is not fully developed or consistently accurate.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'as well as' are overused to connect unrelated ideas, and some transitions are awkward, such as 'After five years the participants had increased drastically'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when discussing the timeline. While there is a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs, the flow is frequently interrupted by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures, which prevents the writing from reaching a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher score. There are several instances of awkward word choice, such as 'participants are held highest' instead of 'participation was highest' and 'accounted constant' instead of 'remained relatively stable'. The student relies on basic verbs like 'increased' and 'decreased' repeatedly. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of sophisticated collocations and the presence of word-choice errors (e.g., 'no increased players') indicate a limited range that is just sufficient to communicate the main points.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('The Film club participants are held highest'), incorrect tense usage ('participants had fall'), and awkward prepositional phrases. Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction is often clunky. While the student attempts complex structures, they are frequently faulty, which is characteristic of the Band 5 level. To improve, the student should focus on consistent tense usage and refining sentence structure to avoid awkward phrasing.
