Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates how many people took part in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the Film club was the most popular activity in a margin over the 20-year period. Meanwhile, the participant in Table tennis and Musical performances experienced upward trends, while Ameteur dramatics saw a dramatic decrease, and Martial arts remained relatively stable.

Regarding the activities increasing participants, the Film club held a highest figure, fluctuated from 60 to 65 until 2010 before rising steadily to peak at around 65. In addition, Table tennis recorded the number of participant incraesed from 16 in 2000 to 20 in 2010, then surged sharply to roughly 52. Starting from zero in 2005, Musical performances grew gradually, reach a peak just under 20.

By contrast, the activities neither decrease and relatively unchaged. Ameteur dramatics record a slightly increase from 25 to 30 in 2005, after which it dropped consistently, ending at just 5 participants. Moreover, Martial arts remained fluctuated between around 32 and 38.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response provides a clear overview of the main trends and identifies key features, such as the popularity of the Film club and the contrasting trends of other activities. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you state the Film club fluctuated from 60 to 65 until 2010, but the graph shows a more consistent trend. Additionally, the description of 'Musical performances' starting from zero in 2005 is accurate, but the overall summary of the data could be more precise. You have successfully highlighted the main features and made relevant comparisons, which satisfies the requirements for this task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on different trends. Cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'In addition', and 'By contrast' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with cohesion, such as the phrase 'the activities neither decrease and relatively unchaged', which is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'upward trends', 'surged sharply', and 'remained relatively stable'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'Ameteur' (Amateur) and 'incraesed' (increased), and some word choice issues, such as 'in a margin' instead of 'by a margin'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider range of precise lexical items to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'the participant in Table tennis... experienced' (should be plural 'participants'), 'reach a peak' (should be 'reaching'), and 'remained fluctuated' (should be 'remained stable' or 'fluctuated'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of these grammatical slips prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and verb forms will significantly improve your accuracy.
