Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants for five different activities -Film club, Martial arts, Amateur dramatics, table tennis, and Musical performances- at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.

Overall, Table tennis experienced a significant growth in the proportion of its participants over the period of time, followed by Musical performances. However, Martial arts, and Film club demonstrated a steady fluctuation throughout the reported timeframe. In contrast, Amateur dramatics showed a steap decline.

In 2000, film club started with the highest proportion of participants around 64, which kept marginally fluctuating over the period, but still maintained its position as number 1 by 2020. Similarly, Martial arts began as the second most popular activity among the individuals and was continuously oscillating, resulting in ending at a third position.

Conversely, Table tennis which had just around 16 participants in 2000 witnessed a dramatic surge specially after 2010, resulting it taking over the 2nd position. Musical performances which came into life just in 2005 also showed a rise. Lastly, Amateur dramatics, which initiated with a third position experienced an exponential decrease in the number of its participants, ending the period as the least participated activity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features and trends of the graph. The overview clearly highlights the significant growth in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics. You have also made relevant comparisons, such as noting the relative positions of the activities in 2000 and 2020. However, the response could be improved by being more precise with data points; for instance, describing the film club as having 'around 64' participants is a good start, but ensuring all key data points are clearly linked to the years would strengthen the analysis. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Similarly', and 'Conversely' to guide the reader through the comparisons. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is more seamless, perhaps by grouping activities with similar trends more explicitly rather than listing them sequentially.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision, using terms like 'significant growth', 'dramatic surge', and 'exponential decrease'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'came into life' (which is informal) and 'steap' (a spelling error). You attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is good, but ensure that these choices are natural in an academic context. The range is adequate for the task, but more sophisticated synonyms for 'number' or 'participants' would enhance the lexical variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'resulting it taking over' (should be 'resulting in it taking over') and 'steap' (spelling). Punctuation is generally handled well, though there are occasional slips. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, and the errors present do not impede communication. To improve, focus on refining complex sentence structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the report.
