Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph illustrates the number of participants for 5 different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, it is clear that the film club remained the most popular activity throughout the period. Table tennis and the musical performances rose significantly during these 20 years. In contrast, amateur dramatics fell sharply throughout the 20-year timeframe.
In 2000, approximately 65 people participated in the film club which was the most popular choice at that time. Although the figure fell to 60 in 2010, this popularity was maintained over time and reached about 67 participants in 2020. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all requirements of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends, such as the film club's consistent popularity and the contrasting trajectories of table tennis and amateur dramatics. Key features are highlighted, and data points are used appropriately to support the descriptions. The comparison between activities is well-integrated throughout the report. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with absolute precision; for instance, ensure the distinction between 'musical performances' and 'amateur dramatics' is clearly linked to the specific years provided in the graph to avoid any ambiguity in the timeline.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, a concise overview, and two body paragraphs that group information effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Although', 'Meanwhile', and 'Furthermore' to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows logically from the general trends to the specific details. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the data presented in the graph.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the trends, including terms like 'surged sharply', 'constant growth', 'fluctuation', and 'remained relatively stable'. This allows for flexibility and precision in your reporting. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the task, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items could enhance the response further. The word choices are natural and contribute to a professional tone, and there are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the use of 'Although' and 'where' clauses to provide additional information. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is handled correctly. While the grammar is generally strong, ensure that subject-verb agreement and article usage remain consistent throughout. The current level of accuracy is high, and the minor slips do not interfere with the clarity of the information provided.
