Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task and identifies key trends, such as the film club's dominance and the decline of amateur dramatics. However, the reporting of data is occasionally inaccurate or confusing, such as the description of the film club's figures, which are difficult to follow. The overview is present but lacks clarity in its phrasing. To improve, ensure that data points are cited precisely and that the summary of trends is more logically structured. While the main features are highlighted, the lack of precision in describing the fluctuations and specific values limits the effectiveness of the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'In the context of materials arts, is experienced some fluctuation'. The flow between sentences is sometimes disjointed, and the referencing is occasionally unclear. While there is an overall progression, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the repetitive sentence structures hinder the logical flow. Improving the variety of transition signals and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'Material arts' (instead of Martial arts) and 'large number contestant'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and the student relies on basic descriptors like 'rose up' or 'fell down'. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or precise collocations related to data description. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more academic vocabulary for trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a sharp decline'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include missing articles ('in city Melbourne'), incorrect verb forms ('is experienced some fluctuation'), and subject-verb agreement errors ('number of participants... had accounted'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement would be beneficial.
