Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, reaching only 83 words. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. The overview is missing, and the response fails to report on the main features or make necessary comparisons between the five activities. Only one activity (film club) is mentioned, and the data interpretation is inaccurate (referring to percentages instead of participant numbers). To improve, you must provide a clear overview of the trends and describe all categories shown in the graph, ensuring you reach the required length by providing a more comprehensive analysis of the data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is too short to demonstrate effective paragraphing or a logical progression of ideas. While there is a basic attempt to introduce the graph, the lack of development means there is no clear structure. Cohesive devices are minimal and mechanical, such as 'On the other hand', which is used incorrectly here as there is no contrast being made between the axes. To improve, you should structure your response with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that group related data points together, using a variety of linking words to connect your sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You rely on basic terms like 'shows' and 'number of'. There are also inaccuracies in terminology, such as referring to the Y-axis units as 'percentage' when the prompt implies raw numbers of participants. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more precise reporting verbs and nouns, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'a significant rise', or 'a downward trend', to describe the data more accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains several grammatical errors that hinder clarity. For instance, 'the amount of individuals' is incorrect; 'number of individuals' should be used for countable nouns. There is also a subject-verb agreement error in 'the number of participants are', which should be 'is'. The sentence structures are simple and lack the variety of complex sentences needed for a higher score. To improve, focus on using a mix of simple and complex structures, and pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions.
