IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The graph illustrates information about total number of people who enrolled in various activities at a social centre in Melbourne, over the period of 20 years from 2000 to 2020, in Australia.
Overall, table tennis was the only activity where there was a significant rise in people's participation in these twenty years. On the other hand, in amateur dramatics, the number of people participating dropped on a major level.
The lines for film club and martial arts can be observed consolidating. From 2000 to 2020, the number of people involved in film club fluctuated between 60 to 70. Same is the case with martial arts, where there were only 30 to 40 people in all these years. Moving towards table tennis, the slope increased slowly between 2000 to 2010, and after that there was a huge surge in next 10 years, soaring number of people that actively participated from around 15 in 2000 to around 55 in 2010. Participation of people in musical performances remained a constant 0 from 2000 to 2005 while the graph for it increased constantly from 2005 to 2020, improving number of people from 0 to around 20.
The graph for amateur dramatics regressed dramatically depicting it as the only activity where people stopped participating over this period of time, decreasing the number from around 30 to around 10 only.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all categories and made relevant comparisons, such as contrasting the rise in table tennis with the decline in amateur dramatics. However, there are some inaccuracies in your data reporting. For instance, you mention table tennis rose from 15 to 55 by 2010, but the graph shows the surge occurring between 2010 and 2020. Additionally, stating amateur dramatics decreased from 30 to 10 is slightly inaccurate as the graph shows it ending closer to 5. Precision in data interpretation is essential for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the other hand' and 'Moving towards'. However, the transition between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'Same is the case with martial arts'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different trends, which helps the reader follow your argument. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the relationship between ideas is more fluidly expressed.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, using terms like 'consolidating', 'fluctuated', and 'regressed'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'soaring number of people' (which is slightly awkward) and 'improving number of people' (where 'increasing' would be more appropriate). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision is sometimes lacking. The range is adequate for the task, but further development of topic-specific collocations would help you reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. For example, 'illustrates information about total number' is missing an article, and 'in next 10 years' should be 'in the next 10 years'. Additionally, 'soaring number of people that actively participated' is a slightly clunky structure. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and prepositional accuracy will significantly improve your writing.
