Student answer (Band 7.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of people who participated in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the film club remained the most popular activity throughout the period. In contrast, table tennis experienced the most significant growth, while participation in amateur dramatics declined considerably. Meanwhile, martial arts fluctuated slightly, and musical performances showed an upward trend.

In 2000, the film club had approximately 64 participants, making it the most popular activity. Over the following decade, this figure fell gradually to 60 in 2010. However, it subsequently increased, reaching around 66 participants in 2020. By comparison, participation in martial arts fluctuated between approximately 32 and 38 people during the period, before ending at around 36 in 2020.

Turning to the other activities, amateur dramatics started at about 26 participants in 2000 and then rose slightly to 28 in 2005. After that, however, the figure declined steadily, reaching only 6 participants by 2020. In contrast, table tennis followed a dramatic upward trend, increasing from approximately 16 participants in 2000 to 54 in 2020. Similarly, musical performances increased from zero participants in 2000 and 2005 to around 18 by the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and selected key data points to support your descriptions. The comparison between activities is well-handled, particularly the contrast between the declining amateur dramatics and the growing table tennis participation. The data is accurately reported, and the inclusion of specific figures from 2000 and 2020 helps to illustrate the trends clearly. You have successfully identified the main features without getting bogged down in unnecessary detail, which is exactly what is required for an Academic Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that group the information effectively. The use of cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Meanwhile', 'By comparison', and 'After that' is natural and helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different activities. The flow of information is smooth, and each sentence contributes to the overall summary of the graph without any unnecessary repetition or confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'declined steadily', 'upward trend', and 'remained the most popular'. The language is precise and fits the context of a data report well. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation. While the vocabulary is accurate and functional, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or collocations related to data analysis could elevate the response further, but the current range is sufficient for a high band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response demonstrates a high level of grammatical control. You have used a variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'The line graph illustrates the number of people who participated...'). The punctuation is accurate, and there are no noticeable grammatical errors. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the text. The writing is clear, professional, and easy to follow.
