Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graph illustrates information about the participants in five different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, it is evident that table tennis and musical performances showed an upward trend, while amateur dramatics declined over the period. In addition, the film club remained the highest figure for the most of the period, while musical performances recorded the lowest number. The most noticeable change was that table tennis overtook amateur dramatics in 2015.

At the beginning of the period, the figure for table tennis stood at almost 18. It then rose gradually to 20. Between 2005 and 2010, it remained stable at 20. By the end of the period, it had climbed sharply to a peak of 54. Similarly, musical performances started at zero in 2005, before rising to more than 10. However, unlike table tennis, it experienced a more gradual increase, reaching almost 18 by 2020.

Regarding amateur dramatics, its figure was approximately 25 in 2000. Between 2000 and 2005, it rose steadily to almost 28, before falling dramatically to around 8 in 2020. Meanwhile, martial arts followed a different pattern. It showed some fluctuations but remained relatively stable at around 35 over the same period. The film club, on the other hand, stood at more than 60 in 2000, then fell gradually to 60 in 2010 before rising slowly to nearly 67 by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all requirements of the task. You have successfully identified the main trends and provided relevant data points to support your descriptions. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant changes, such as the upward trend in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics. You have also made effective comparisons, for instance, noting when table tennis overtook amateur dramatics. The information is accurate and well-selected, ensuring the reader gets a clear picture of the data provided in the graph. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with maximum precision, as some figures (e.g., 'almost 18') could be slightly more refined based on the visual evidence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information effectively. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Similarly', 'However', and 'Meanwhile' to link ideas smoothly. The progression of information is logical, moving from general trends to specific details. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of activities. The flow of the text is natural, and the relationship between the different activities is clearly articulated, making the report easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'upward trend', 'remained stable', 'climbed sharply', and 'fluctuations' are used effectively in the context of describing a graph. There is a good awareness of collocation, and the vocabulary is appropriate for an academic report. While the range is good, incorporating a few more sophisticated or varied synonyms for 'rose' or 'fell' would enhance the lexical variety further. Overall, the vocabulary is accurate and contributes to a professional tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with good control. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally accurate. You successfully use complex structures, such as 'Unlike table tennis, it experienced a more gradual increase', which demonstrates grammatical flexibility. There are no significant errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex sentence forms, such as using more participial phrases or advanced relative clauses to describe the trends, which would further demonstrate your grammatical range.
