IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

 

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants in five activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the film club remained is most popular activity throughout the period while amateur dramatics became less popular. In contrast table tennis recorded the most significant increase in participation.

In 2000, around 64 people attended the film club, compared with 36 participants in martial arts and 26 in amateur dramatics. Film club attendance fell slightly to 60 in 2010 before rising to approximately 66 by 2020. Martial arts figures fluctuated between 32 and 38 participants over the years and ended at about 36.

Amateur dramatics showed a downward trend after 2005, declining from 28 participants to only 6 in 2020. On the other hand, table tennis grew steadily from 16 participants in 2000 to 20 in 2010, then increased sharply to 54 by 2020. Musical performances had no participants in 2000 and 2005 but rose gradually to around 18 participants by the end of the period.
