Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph illustrates the data of participants for various performances at a social center in Melbourne Australia for the era of 2000 to 2020. We have information of the five activities presented at social center; Film Club, Martial arts, Amateur dramatics, Table tennis or Musical performances.

Firstly, 63 participants performed under the category of Film club in 2000. Number of people involved in this activity declined by 2010 and then started rising till 2020 to 70 participants. Secondly, there was a clear fluctuation of people in the act of martial arts. Over years, number of performers changed throughout the period of two decades.

Amateur dramatics was only category in which we noticed a sharp decline of attendants from 2005 to 2020. It had 27 participants in 2000 which level out to 30 in 2005. Later on, they only remained with 3 performers.

Number of Table tennis players had a distinct behavior in that social center. We observed that people of Melbourne had a positive attitude towards that sport. Initially in 2000, 20 players participated in table tennis, later on the next five years they remained constant. From 2010 to 2020, there was a sharp increase in number of players to 52 participants.

Early in 2000, musical performances had no trend. When people started performing in 2005, only 12 people performed which later increase to 20 people in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the graph and provided a clear overview of the trends for each activity. You covered all categories and made relevant comparisons, such as noting the sharp decline in amateur dramatics versus the growth in table tennis. However, the response lacks a clear 'overview' paragraph that synthesizes the most significant trends across the entire period. To reach a higher band, ensure you group information more logically rather than listing each activity sequentially, and provide a more analytical summary of the overall patterns observed in the data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific activity, which makes the information easy to follow. You used basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Later on' to signal transitions. However, the progression between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For instance, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. Improving the use of linking phrases to connect ideas within and between paragraphs would enhance the flow and logical progression of your report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'fluctuation', 'declined', and 'constant'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'performances' used to describe all activities (e.g., table tennis is a sport, not a performance) and 'act of martial arts'. Additionally, phrases like 'had a distinct behavior' are slightly unnatural in this context. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology related to data description and ensuring your vocabulary choices are contextually appropriate for the specific activities mentioned.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the era of 2000 to 2020' (should be 'period'), 'Amateur dramatics was only category' (missing article), and 'later increase to 20 people' (tense inconsistency). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in article usage and subject-verb agreement. To achieve a higher band, work on maintaining consistent verb tenses when describing past data and refining your use of articles and prepositions to ensure greater accuracy.
