Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response provides a summary of the main features of the graph. You have identified the key trends, such as the decline in amateur dramatics and the growth in table tennis and musical performances. However, the report lacks a clear, distinct overview paragraph, which is essential for a high band score. While you mention some data points, the description of the trends is occasionally imprecise, such as describing the martial arts trend as a 'zigzag' rather than using more formal analytical language. To improve, ensure you clearly group the data into logical categories and provide a concise summary of the overall trends in the introduction or as a separate paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as the use of 'Although' at the start of the final sentence, which does not fit the context. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the transitions between sentences could be smoother. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when discussing the time periods. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear focus would significantly enhance the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher bands. You rely on basic descriptors like 'increased', 'declined', and 'same'. Phrases such as 'rise and down zigzag' are informal and not suitable for an academic report. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to data trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a significant growth'. Additionally, ensure that you use collocations correctly; for instance, 'at the period 2020' is incorrect and should be 'in 2020'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are several grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede clarity. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, such as 'The graph illustrate' instead of 'illustrates'. There are also issues with preposition usage, for example, 'in the period 2000' should be 'in 2000' or 'during the period 2000-2020'. The sentence structures are mostly simple or compound, with limited use of complex sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and refining your use of prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures will also help demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
