Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants for five different activities such as film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia in between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, it is clear that, film club and martial arts had relatively stable participants in the initial and last years. Conversely, the number of participants in table amateur dramatics declined after 2005. However, table tennis and musical performances witnessed almost similar trends with each other throughout the given period.

In detail, in the beginning of the period, the film club had nearly 65 participants, while this figure remained relatively stable throughout all the years. Although, the number of participants in martial arts fluctuated throughout the given years, the figure stood at 35 in 2000 and 2020.

Furthermore, the number of participants in amateur dramatics was 25 in the year 2000, the number plummeted drastically after the year 2005 and reached 5 over the two decades. By contrast, table tennis and musical performance considerably show similar trends. In 2000, table tennis had 15 participants in the 2000; however, this figure rose to 55 in last year. Likewise, musical performances had 0 participants in the first year, after twenty years, the number of participants increased significantly to 15.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all key features of the graph, including trends and specific data points. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the stability of the film club and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, the overview could be more analytical; while you mention trends, grouping the activities by their trajectory (e.g., those that increased versus those that declined) would provide a stronger summary. The data is generally accurate, though there is a minor confusion in the description of table tennis and musical performances, where you state they show 'similar trends' despite one starting at 15 and the other at 0. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'conversely', 'however', 'furthermore', and 'by contrast' to link ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. One minor issue is the repetition of 'the number of participants' at the start of several sentences, which makes the flow slightly mechanical. To improve, try using referencing pronouns or varying the sentence structure to avoid repetitive phrasing. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'witnessed almost similar trends', 'plummeted drastically', and 'increased significantly' are used effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'table amateur dramatics' (likely a typo) and 'in the 2000' (unnecessary article). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the sophisticated, less common collocations that would push the score into the higher bands. Focusing on more precise reporting verbs and avoiding repetitive noun phrases will help enhance your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Although, the number of participants in martial arts fluctuated... the figure stood at 35'. While most sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'in between 2000 and 2020' (the 'in' is redundant) and 'in the 2000' (incorrect preposition usage). Punctuation is generally sound, though there is an unnecessary comma after 'Although'. The errors present do not impede communication, but more consistent control over complex structures and prepositional phrases is needed to reach a higher band.
