IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the graph, it is quite obvious that the number of film club and martial arts participants did not vary on a large scale between 2000 and 2020. The table tennis and musical performance participants increased throughout the period, while the amateur dramatics participants decreased drastically.
During this whole period, at the social center in Melbourne, the number of film club participants remained the highest. Similarly, during the starting period, the number of martial arts participants remained the second highest till 2015.
Tennis started as the least played sport, and within the next 10 years it overtook martial arts with more than 35 participants in 2015. Initially, there was no musical show, but they introduced it in 2005, and it remained a promising, growing sport during the rest of the period.
The activists in the amateur dramatic club decreased on a large scale throughout

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. While you have identified the main trends, such as the growth in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics, the analysis is incomplete. The final sentence is cut off abruptly, leaving the summary unfinished. Furthermore, the data reporting is somewhat imprecise; for instance, referring to musical performances as a 'sport' is factually incorrect based on the prompt. To improve, ensure you provide a complete overview, include more specific data points to support your comparisons, and ensure all parts of the task are fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by the incomplete nature of the final paragraph. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Similarly' and 'Initially', but the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical. The abrupt ending significantly disrupts the coherence of the response. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph has a clear concluding thought and that transitions between sentences are used more naturally to link the data points effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the main trends, using terms like 'increased', 'decreased', and 'overtook'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as referring to musical performances as a 'sport' and using 'activists' instead of 'participants' or 'members'. These errors slightly impede the precision of your report. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology related to data description and ensure that the words chosen accurately reflect the context of the graph provided.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Tennis started as the least played sport, and within the next 10 years it overtook martial arts'. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'the number of film club and martial arts participants did not vary on a large scale', the meaning remains clear. Punctuation is generally accurate, but the incomplete final sentence prevents a full assessment of your ability to handle complex structures. Focus on proofreading to catch minor errors and ensure all sentences are complete.
