The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

 

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the film club remained the most popular activity throughout the period, while amateur dramatics declined considerably.

In 2000, around 64 people participated in the film club, making it the most popular activity. This figure fell slightly to about 60 in 2010, before rising again to approximately 67 in 2020. The number of people involved in martial arts was about 36 in 2000. It decreased to around 32 in 2005, then reached nearly 38 in 2010, before falling back to about 36 in 2020.

Amateur dramatics had approximately 25 participants in 2000 and increased slightly to 28 in 2005. However, its popularity then declined sharply, reaching about 20 in 2010 and only 5 participants by 2020. In contrast, table tennis showed a strong upward trend. Starting at around 16 participants in 2000, the number rose to 20 in 2005 and 2010, before increasing dramatically to about 35 in 2015 and 55 in 2020.
